U.S. consumers conducted nearly 88 billion debit transactions in 2021, according to the most recent Federal Reserve Payment Study. This represents a 56% increase over 2015 levels.

Despite being a mature consumer product, debit continues to grow at a healthy pace. A number of factors are driving this ongoing increase in debit use. Chief among them are a lasting consumer preference for debit and the industry’s investments in the payment form, which have enabled it to adapt to changes in technology and consumer use.
