Strategies to Secure Millennial and Gen Z Loyalty

Headshot of Sofia Rojo Del Busto, a market-research leader at West Monroe's Market Research and Insights practice.

In today’s payments landscape, winning the account is only half the battle. Retaining it is what dictates long-term growth in an increasingly crowded debit market. To keep debit relationships active and relevant, issuers must deliver compelling, high-value experiences. Data from the 2026 PULSE Debit Issuer Study reveals approximately 40% of traditional financial institutions are losing share, making proactive portfolio management and cardholder engagement critical focus areas.

Capturing Millennial and Gen Z loyalty offers major growth potential, but their unique financial habits demand targeted strategies. Understanding what drives their behavior – and triggers disengagement – is essential for optimal debit performance.

In a recent PULSE webinar, Sofia Rojo Del Busto, a market-research expert at West Monroe, shared actionable strategies to meet next-generation expectations. She examined why young adults switch financial institutions, identified high-impact debit features and account benefits, and outlined practical tactics to earn long-term cardholder retention.

Understanding the shift in next-gen priorities

To capture and retain Millennial and Gen Z cardholders, debit issuers must recognize a fundamental shift: young consumers are defining financial success on their own terms. West Monroe’s research reveals that traditional life milestones such as getting married, starting a family, or maintaining an active social life are not priorities for this audience. Instead, their immediate focus centers on financial stability, peace of mind, and long-term security.

"They are focusing on securing their financial future, their mental health, and their happiness, and right now, they’re feeling pretty financially insecure.”

This psychological shift directly impacts retention. Account switching is rarely triggered by a single event; rather, it stems from a cumulative erosion of perceived value and trust. To safeguard cardholder loyalty, debit issuers must proactively address breakdowns in trust, security vulnerabilities, and uncompetitive value propositions.

Bridging the expectation gap to deliver greater value

Del Busto notes that loyalty is currently a very coveted currency. Enhancing core debit functionality to deliver immediate, meaningful value will help issuers maintain top-of-wallet position and prevent switching. When evaluating debit-card innovation ideas that would make their financial relationships more valuable, young cardholders prioritized concepts like:

  1. Security, fraud, and card controls that provide essential peace of mind and reinforce spending control.
  2. Meaningful rewards that signal appreciation and value beyond basic transactions.
  3. Flexible payment options like Buy Now, Pay Later for debit that keep payment-method access simple and seamless.
  4. Frictionless money movement and peer-to-peer payments that provide quick and convenient transfer options.
  5. Personalized spending insights, valued by Gen Z, that build financial confidence.

“The strongest opportunities are the ones that build on debit’s existing strengths and leverage the reasons that this audience is choosing already: security, control, simplicity, and value,” Del Busto urges. “If we focus on those things and continue to deliver on those core values of the debit product, that’s going to keep people engaged, keep the card relevant, and earn long-term trust and loyalty.”
